so 358/2 days, amiright? heres my thoughts

this game is just. god its an emotional rollarcoaster

i guess ill start with the things i dont like!! which is mostly the gameplay. i dont really mind the mission structure shockingly (i like being able to roam around but having a clear goal makes things easier for my adhd ass, and i think the miniature storylines are very good for the most part) but i simply could Not get into the combat. especially coming off of kh2 it feels so stiff and unfun to play the only part of the game where i enjoyed the combat was fighting riku at the very end. i think the panel system is okay but i dont like that levels take up space. why did they do that.

story-wise, i dont like the retcons!! a lot of the ones i take issue with are very minor but things like roxas only fighting riku once instead of the implied multiple times (even the dialogue doesnt make sense when you change that, why does roxas say 'how many times do i have to beat you' when theyve only fought once?) are the kinds of inconsistencies that just annoy me.

im also a little bit annoyed at the very concept of this game at all. i think roxas worked just fine as a character without this game. it feels sort of unnecessary in the grand scheme of things. also, xion. i love xion, dont get me wrong, but i dont think she adds anything to the series over all. thats not to say she doesnt add anything to this game because shes a great character and i love her, but shes just. kind of like this game in that if you got rid of her i dont think it would really change the narrative so much.

BUT DESPITE THAT ALL!!!!!!!! i fucking ADORE this game. it is genuinely so full of charm and soul that i just cant bring myself to dislike it. i think this is one of the best written games in terms of dialogue. every scene (at least for me) hit exactly as emotionally hard as i think it was meant to. i was laughing at demyx's antics and crying at xions death and yelling at saix and i think thats exactly how the game is meant to be seen.

days at its heart is a slice of life. its working a 9 to 5 its going through a depressive episode its losing friends its grieving its making fun of your coworkers its living. its a game about life and i love that.

this game really did make me forget that axel roxas and xion dont get a happy ending. i spent so much time looking forward to them making up that i forgot that roxas ran away. hell i almost forgot that xion died.

days is emotional and its story and its characters are just so fucking good. the conflicts all felt very real and you can tell exactly where everyones coming from. the way axel roxas and xion fall apart hits so fucking close to home. but god damnit if axel had any good communication skills like half of this could be avoided

its also one hell of a love letter to axel's character. hes always been one of my favorites (he recently earned first place) and i think this game does him a lot of justice. hes trying to do good. he wants to keep everything together he wants to be there for his friends he wants to make things right but he just cant. its just AUGH its so fucking good

that thing about axel's characterization really also applies to roxas. i dont have much to say about him beyond the fact that i think it does his character very well. also tism. hes so autism.

i kind of like the very limited graphics too. sue me i enjoy low quality games. the hands are not animated and they all have two expressions (blinking and not blinking) and their weapons are flat and im living for it. the very few fully animated cutscenes are good too!!

the (real, i dont count riku) final boss is unfortunately very easy. you can just stand directly in front of her and mash a she wont hit you its too easy but vector to the heavens did mess me up a bit. also earlier scene but "ill always be there to bring you back" with the other promise playing over it? fucked me up man. yoko shimomura is once again killing it

i cant believe roxas didnt get to go to the beach.

i have to give this game a 9/10. its writing is incredible but the gameplay could use a lot of work. its just not fun to play. but again the characters, emotions, and music all make up for that tenfold.

Hey, Aamir Khan fan. I was wondering if you enjoyed the movies I recommended. If you liked them and Aamir's acting I have more movies for you to see!

Watched Dhoom3 and holy gamole guilty pleasure galore! Aamir Khan is a movie star of the bygone Hollywood golden era but still well and alive in Bollywood. That Dhoom3 took place in "exotic locale" Chicago was not lost on me.

Aamir Khan is a force of nature as the antagonist, and the movie only pretends to try to resist Aamir's gravitational pull as he's on an obsessive revenge mission to destroy a bank whom he blames for the death of his father. By day he's a brazen bank robber, by night he's the star cirque du solei performer.

I'm unfamiliar with the Dhoom franchise but I get the sense that #3 essentially turned the antagonist into the protagonist and side lined the heroic Mumbai cop Jai Dixit and his goofy sidekick Ali Akbar. It's only in the 3rd act that Jai finally has an arc that involves cat-and-mouse chase of switch-a-roo magicians and why cops and thieves could never be friends not just because they are on opposite side of the law (in the U.S it's not unheard of for felons to marry police wo/men).

There's high-octane actions and crazy stunts with motorcycles that makes me wish there is a crossover with Fast & Furious just to see motorcycles vs cars war. Dhoom 3 fully embraces the insane, the zany, the complete disregard for logic, and slo-mo action scenes that extends the movie's running from 2 1/2 to nearly 3 hours. But what makes this movie stand out among action movies is the highly emotional storyline of Aamir’s character, which requires spoilers ahead.

While I saw the twist coming during the glitzy cirque du solei scene, the reveal that Aamir's Sahir has a twin name Samar was very satisfying, helped by the soundtrack that is unapologetically bombastic throughout the movie, providing vital emotional hook for scenes that otherwise would have fallen flat.

I feel that Aamir borrowed from Dustin Hoffman's Rainman to portray the autistic math savant Samar who is hidden from the world and only brought out to take over second half of Sahir's role in bank heists and circus performances. Nobody outside their late father knew that there are two men instead of one.

Due to isolation and his mental disorder, Aamir plays Samar as a slouching wide-eyed innocent with complete trust in the perfectly postured Sahir, whose scowl reflects his relentless ambition and revenge mission that has prevented him from romantic pursuits in the lovely Aaliya, the cirque du solei lead female performer. Even though Sahir is the public face of the circus and has many interactions with his cast and the police men on the case to catch him, he is just as isolated and insular as Samar.

Before the twin reveal, Aamir tries to drop hints to the audience when he is playing Samar, mainly by showing his puppy love for Aaliya during the cirque du solei performance from their switch-a-roo act, contrasted with Sahir's indifference towards her when the curtain drops and the show ends. It is this reason why Aaliya was able to avoid the Lois Lane trap and figured out she has been singing and dancing with two different men.

Then the movie throws another twist when Jai meets with Samar to convince him to help turn in Sahir, only to turn out to be Sahir in another satisfying reveal that I didn't see coming. One of my favorite acting scenes is the flashback of Sahir taking Samar's place by switching clothes and when he starts walking, he morphs into Samar's physicality on his way to meet Jai, who is sympathetic toward the brothers but the law is the law. Jai wants to help the brothers by having turn themselves in and plea for mercy. Sahir eventually agrees after failing to kill Jai by rollarcoaster (trust me, just go along with it) and makes a deal by taking the full blame and leaving Samar free and to be with Aaliya.

But in the final twist, the faithful Samar refuses to follow Sahir's plan and instead choose to follow Sahir to his death. I admit I wasn't sure if they would go this route because it would be too heartbreaking, and yet I was still surprised that the dual deaths happened even when it makes narrative sense. The brothers lived as one person all their lives would die together in the end, clutching hands. It's also a genius call back to the movie's first scene of Sahir running down the side of the bank he just robbed.

Score: 8.5 out of 10. Very entertaining high-octane movie with very strong emotional heart. I think if the story didn't take place in Chicago, a city I'm very familiar with, I might have rated the movie higher.

Summary:

Mirai Kuriyama is the sole survivor of a clan of Spirit World warriors with the power to employ their blood as weapons. As such, Mirai is tasked with hunting down and killing “youmu”—creatures said to be the manifestation of negative human emotions. One day, while deep in thought on the school roof, Mirai comes across Akihito Kanbara, a rare half-breed of youmu in human form. In a panicked state, she plunges her blood saber into him, only to realize that he’s an immortal being. From then on, the two form an impromptu friendship that revolves around Mirai constantly trying to kill Akihito, in an effort to boost her own wavering confidence as a Spirit World warrior. Eventually, Akihito also manages to convince her to join the Literary Club, which houses two other powerful Spirit World warriors, Hiroomi and Mitsuki Nase.

Propaganda:

I haven’t heard many people talk about this anime, but honestly this is my favourite romance anime (I don’t even like romance anime). It has an interesting shonen-esque world that’s introduced to us by an array of colourful characters and manages to keep you interested the entire time! This show has a bit of everything: fantasy, comedy, romance, and they all mix into an emotional rollarcoaster that has an episode where they become Japanese Idols for some reason. The animation is on another level –especially for 2013– and it has a beautiful story with a conclusion that I’ve never really seen with many other anime!

Rise of the Empire

Welp. It’s that time again.

The Procellarum half of Tsukino Empire released this morning. You know what that means...

Time to do gachas at three in the morning again! *Sobs as I throw all my jewels at the gacha system wailing about how much I love this set and the chibi familiars*

If you know me, you know exactly who I was after.

I love Shun. I love tigers. I love white tigers. I love Shun with a white tiger. This card is purrfect~ (I will not apologize for that pun, but I will stop for meow~)

I had ~2200 jewels to start with, making for just under nine pulls. I felt comfortable enough spending all of them if needed, since I usually get a four star around the sixth.

Hahahahahahahahaha. This game loves to troll me.

The first two pulls I got a bunch of new three stars which was nice because I needed more cards to grind jewels out of (plus they were some of my favorite ALIVE characters so yay!). 

Then the third pull began what I’m affectionately calling, “The Rise of the Empire”.

I got Iku, which I was ecstatic about. I don’t have any four star cards of his, besides his Easter one, and I had a feeling I would get some of the other cards in this set (which I’m not complaining about because I love this set~).

I thought maybe it was a sign that my luck would be kind to me today~

And then this happened:

*Cue Claire trying not to scream from astonishment*

I got both Kai and You in the same pull, which just blew my mind and made me excited/fearful for a few reasons.

Reason number 1. Neither Kai or You had rate up today, so they had a .286% chance of appearing each. And I got both of them in the same pull.

Reason Number 2. I don’t have any You four star cards, so this is my first. And I’m super happy it is, because like I keep saying, I REALLY love this set!

Reason Number 3. Kai continues to haunt me. Seriously. Aside from the Procellarum Duet Gacha, Kai has always showed up in advance to Shun (if I even get him).

After this, I figured that I had just used up all of my luck and was starting to feel disheartened about the situation. Don’t get me wrong, I was more than grateful for what I got, but I obviously want Shun the most. So I kept going.

And then four pulls later...

Rui decided to tag along yay! (Probably because Iku and Kai were already here lol~) I love Rui’s little familiar, because I love cats lol, and he’s also my child so I was very happy.

But then the realization dawned on me and I was instantly crushed. I had just spent all my jewels and I didn’t get Shun. But I was determined. If I could just grind out another 50 jewels, I could do another pull. And that’s exactly what I did.

*A bit of grinding later*

So I had just enough to do another pull. And my luck continued to torment me. I will admit that I was so upset by this that I didn’t take a picture (beside the card when it showed up) because I was so frustrated and sad.

Iku came back again. Now Iku has started to haunt me.

I had nothing. No more jewels. For the first time since the AGF gacha, I failed to get a Shun card. Only this time it stung a whole hell of a lot worse since I loved this card.

I’ll admit, I was tempted to buy jewels right then and there, but I knew that if I did that there would be no guarantee of it happening. Plus, I’ve never spent a penny on gacha games. If I did so now, I knew I’d regret it later.

But there was a silver lining. If I waited it out for a few weeks, I could grind up the necessary jewels to buy him with points since I had done a total of ten pulls. With that small glimmer of hope, I got busy, grinding up whatever jewels I could in the meanwhile.

To my surprise, I actually managed to get another 250 jewels somehow. And I returned once more to the gacha page to stare at it. 

I stared at it for at least a solid minute.

Wishing.

Praying.

And instantly regretting.

In an impulse moment, I spent that 250 jewels hoping for some miracle. I knew in my heart that I should just be patient and wait, but the turmoil in my heart was so great that I just had to try again.

...I guess Shun really can grant wishes.

The Empire has risen.

In that moment when I saw him on my screen, I may or may not have shed a few tears. I’ll keep saying it because I firmly believe it; Shun has a dark sense of humor and loves toying with me.

Perhaps the Tower needed proof that my convictions were pure and true...

Regardless, I got him and DEAR SWEET SHUN I LOVE THIS CARD SO MUCH!!!

I realize Undertale's been out for like 7 years now, but with the new Deltarune chapter, some people might wanna go try and take a stab at Undyne the Undying and Sans. To which I say, that's extremely valid, they're painfully difficult but so satisfying to beat. Even if it is an emotional rollarcoaster to get there.

As a genocide run veteran, bit of useful advice:

Save the best food for Sans. Snowman pieces can be used on Undyne if you really want, but they're best saved for Sans. Pie should NEVER be used on Undyne; it's the only item that'll always take you back up to 92 hp, so it's a waste on Undyne.

Grinding all the kills in each area is annoying. The quickest method is to head straight to the last room with encounters in that area, go to the top wall, and just hold the up and down keys at the same time. You'll sort of wiggle around in place, which farms encounters super fast. Once you've finished killing, you can roll right on out of there with minimal interruptions. Yes, the farming looks silly; we call it the Murder Dance.

Don't worry about money; you can't buy temmie armour on a genocide run. Gerson and Burgerpants are the only people that'll sell to you anyways. Attack and defense only ever matter against Undyne, and you'll just want the dusty tutu and ballet shoes for her.

Undyne the Undying always does the same attacks on turns; for example, she turns you red again on turn 3. After a few tries, you'll start getting a good feel for it. I recommend taking notes as you go; it helps to know exactly what you're about to be dealing with each turn. Make sure to mark which turns you find difficult to dodge, so you know when you absolutely need full health going into a turn.

You can technically take notes for Sans as well, but after you get past the fake spare, he starts hitting you while its your turn, so the second half of the fight you don't have time to check notes. Best to just get used to muscle memory with him.

Sans hits for 1 hp per frame, with karma damage as an extra fuck you to drain your health, and dodges every attack. Chara's locket and knife are worthless to you; the best gear for the Sans fight is the Cloudy Glasses, and the best weapon is either the Torn Notebook or Burnt Pan. The burnt pan makes food heal you a little more, which is helpful, while the glasses and notebook give you a little bit of i-frames. It's not much, but it makes a world of difference; just the glasses makes you invincible every fourth frame, while glasses and notebook makes it every third frame. Normally, Sans can hit up to 30 hp in a second, but with glasses and notebook equipped that's reduced to 23 hp per second. The glasses and notebook equipped together will also make KR drain your health slower, giving you a better chance of surviving each turn. If you want the glasses and notebook, make sure to buy them from Gerson as you go past, because backtracking through a dead area takes a fucking century with 'but nobody came' interruptions every five seconds.

Pie and Instant Noodles should NOT be used in the first half of the Sans fight unless you're still learning the ropes and want more time alive to practice. If you're making a serious run at victory, the pie and noodles are for the second phase; scrolling through the menu can drain your health to 1, so you need the full heals to make it worth it.

Sans will keep 'sparing' you until you take the bait or attack. This is the final checkpoint; after that, he starts attacking you in the menu, so you'll need to be 100% ready to go for the rest of the fight. Heal up (NOT with the pie or noodles, unless they're all you've got left), stretch, have a drink, tie your hair back, adjust the volume, scratch your nose, go to the bathroom... do whatever you need to be ready for the most intense battle of your fucking life, because this is the last time your hands can safely leave the keyboard until the fight is over.

Most of all, stay calm. Undyne the Undying and Sans are incredibly mean bosses. This is not like Jevil or Spamton Neo. You're going to be here for a very long time. But you will learn the patterns, you will get better, and you will beat them. If you start getting angry, take a break. If you start getting sloppy, take a break. They're not going anywhere. Try to be zen about attacks that are especially mean for you; just heal up and tank the damage. Every attempt is a learning experience, and every death brings you closer to victory. You just have to stay determined.

The Playstation four controller is on the bed a couple of feet away from Richie’s crossed legs at a weird angle like he’s dropped it The game is unpaused so there’s a very impatient Spyro looking back at them from the screen. 

Eddie tries to conceal his amusement at the look Richie is giving to his stomach the best he can, but a laugh still makes it out. “Hey Rich, whatcha doin’?”

It’s a moment before Richie looks up at him, and the suspicious look on his face fades into mild annoyance. “The little fucker kicked me.”

“I’m pretty sure I’ve told you before that’s no way to talk about our child.” Eddie points out as he climbs onto the bed next to him. “Is that why you’ve abandoned Spyro? He’s looking a little lonely there.”

“He’ll live.”

Eddie hums an agreement, leaning towards Richie to press a kiss just under his ear. “And did we eat today?”

“Two meals and half of one of the big bags of Doritos.”

Eddie arches a brow at that, sitting back from him slightly. “Richie.”

“Fine two and a half of the bags.”

“That cannot be healthy at all.”

Richie snorts. “Lay off my eating habits, I’m incubating here.”

Eddie shakes his head, not even bothering to dignify that with a response as he reaches out to brush a hand against Richie’s stomach. “How’ve you been today?”

Richie nods his head towards his side of the bed where Eddie knows there’s a bucket stored. “On and off every couple of hours. Morning sickness is a literal lie. Whoever named it that either had the best pregnancy ever or just didn’t have a kid.”

“So your day has been vomiting, eating gross chips and playing Spyro?”

“Ah, ah, I put up the rest of the crib this morning so I don’t want any complaints about my eating habits and Spyro binging.”

“I told you to leave that to me.”

Richie rolls his eyes, nudging his elbow into Eddie’s side. “You do enough around here, I’m not going to die putting a crib together - though the kid might die if you put them in there without checking my crafting skills are on par with your own.”

“This is why I said leave it to me,” Eddie reaches between them and entangles their fingers together. “Not because I think you’re gonna get hurt all the time, but just because I know that you with tools is not a good idea. I’ll check it tomorrow.”

There’s a laugh from Richie as he leans into Eddie’s side, resting his head against his shoulder. “Super fair assumption. I’m surprised I didn’t break the whole thing.”

Eddie smiles, resting his head against the top of Richie’s. “Jury’s still out on that one, Rich.” He rubs a soothing circle against the back of Richie’s hand. “So, did you think of any names yet or are you still avoiding it?”

“Listen, if you want our child to have a dumb name like the cat then by all means I will give them a name but you know naming things is not my speciality.”

“There’s nothing wrong with the name you gave to the cat.”

“I’m not talking about Shiva, Eddie. I’m talking about the little shit we call Loofa.”

Eddie is silent a moment, suddenly remembering the reason they call one of their cats L and blame a Deathnote obsession neither of them actually have. “Okay, you’re not allowed to name anything anymore.”

“A wise choice Eds. Have you thought of any?”

Richie gives his hand a squeeze, leaning more into his side. “Okay, let’s hear ‘em.”

“Sam, Tyler, Laura, Kate, Isabelle, and Esmeralda.”

Eddie shrugs, careful not to disturb Richie too much. “Just Celia, Rebecca, and Aster.”

Richie hums, almost thoughtfully, and turns his head to rest more comfortably on Eddie’s shoulder. “Okay that last one… that kind of stands out from the others so I have to ask why it's on the list.”

“It means star in Greek.”

“Aster… I like that one the most.”

“Yeah? Me too.”

Richie tilts his head back, nudging his nose against Eddie’s jaw. “I think we just named our kid.”

“Good, maybe you’ll stop calling them a little fucker now.”

“Absolutely not, Eds. They will always be a little fucker.”

“Do not let your mom hear you call them that she’ll kill you.”

“Fine, they’ll always be a little fucker unless my mom is arou-” Richie frowns suddenly and sits up, glaring down at his stomach. 

Eddie, who still has one hand resting there and is fully aware of what just happened, smiles and taps his fingers gently across the area rhythmically. “I don’t think they liked that.”

“Damn Eds, what was your first clue?” Richie snaps, though there’s no bite to his words. “That’s the first real kick. Usually you don’t feel them.”

“They clearly wanted you to get the message so they ratted you out to me.”

I’ve been planning chapter 12 of PWTUH for the past half our and now it’s it’s three thirty in the morning!

with the replanning that I hinted at in my previous statement...I can already tell that it’ll be a whirlwind of a chapter. you’re emotions is getting belted up for the rollarcoaster of their life -maybe that’s a lot of an exaggeration but i have to prepare ya’ll!

my original plan for this series had chapter 12 being the beginning of the end of this story filled with sweetness, rainbows and sparkles- BUT!!! now it’s just the beginning of more heart ache and longing and...i apologise for what i’m about to put you all through....

...oh my god...i’m so sorry! i’m speechless at myself right now for what i’ve planned but i’m also kinda, maybe, a little bit excited as well...

Bellamy || Echo - v : the ring

Two and a half years in and Bellamy felt as if the six years should be over by now - high hopes that he would wake up and and it would be time to make it back to the ground. It wasn’t easy being back in space - sure it was nice not having to fight for their lives every hour but now they just had their personal demons to deal with on the daily. The ground kept them alert and distracted - the ring kept them.. alone. 

No, he didn’t trust Echo but he wasn’t going to let her kill herself either. She was smart, strategic and strong. That was no way for her to die and they needed her... Even though she hadn’t earned his trust then, leaving her to die would be just one more person left on his conscious. 

The ring though - they all had to put their differences aside, eventually. It wasn’t going to happen over night and it didn’t. There was a lot of emotions the first few months, leaving Clarke behind still a daily struggle to get over but they had to live so she wouldn’t die in vain and that was the plan. It wasn’t easy and they still had two and a half years left, Bellamy knew more tensions would rise and fall and the closer they got the more of a rollarcoaster this would become. They had to make the best of it though and that included forgiving Echo. Working on trusting her - it wasn’t like she could run away up here or turn against him - not really. The test would be when they got back on the ground but right now this is where they were at. 

Bellamy was on and off with sleep, tonight was an off night and he sat at the kitchen table, focused on the still burning ball of fire - darker now and some spots almost black - it still created a dim enough light for the area though. His fingers ran along the side of the metal cup in his hand when he saw her round the corner, a tight lipped smile as he looked at her and then back out the window, “Can’t sleep?” Nodding to the seat next to him if she wanted.

seeing that robert sean leonard comparison made me wonder since he is such a wonderful actor: what do you think are the most well acted moments of skam? (personally my favorite is the phone call scene in 3x09. that was extraordinary, so natural, i really felt like i was the one calling and the nerves would destroy me.)

Hey, sorry, I was thinking about this question for a while! It’s so hard to choose because the bar is so high. Also, I’m just watching this as a layman without any technical knowledge so separating what I love because of the production choices vs what really features the acting can be tricky. I’m probably biased towards the moments that really feel like a punch to the gut too? My simple answer: “anytime Tarjei’s face (or even the back of his head, really) appears onscreen and also Henrik really getting to dig in during episodes 8-10 and also all eye contact they have together because that can tell their whole love story”. But I tried to do a top five, since you asked!

Honorable mentions: Tarjei in 6.10 part 3 - Kan du varme et til meg også, Henrik in 8.10 part 1 - Tenke det du føler, both in 5.10 part 1 - Hjernen er alene, both in 9.10 part 4 - O Helga Natt.

5) Henrik in 5.10 part 4 - Pause. I love love love that such a quiet scene is so pivotal and that it really only gets its significance from what they aren’t saying. They’re both good here but I single out Henrik because he goes through a complete emotional rollarcoaster in four and a half minutes. He’s nervous, then maybe the most simply happy we’ve seen him on “I’m not sad!”, then alarmed… resigned… saying goodbye. The first time around though… I didn’t see it all. This was second clip that aired after I started watching the show in real time and at that point, I still hadn’t figured out what was going on with Even. So, my first watch through, I was taken in by the way Even forces himself to remain casual and thought it was empathy for Isak rather than a personal reveal. Henrik in this scene is so good because there was just enough there, it was only when I watched it a second time that the alarm in his initial reaction and the moment he looks down clued me in that something was wrong here for him. When I watch it now though, I can almost see the thoughts flitting across his face the whole time as if he’s actually speaking them. It’s a love being built up and then suddenly slipping away right there in that locker room.

Standout detail: When he averts his eyes and takes a second to process:

4) Tarjei in 9.10 part 3 - Sees fredag. Already mentioned in the ask but this scene is done entirely through watching Tarjei go through different emotions in a room by himself. You don’t need to do anything but watch him to get how nervous he was: how he holds the phone to his heart, how he was steeling himself and running through his opening words in his head, how he closed his eyes and chanted silently “pick up, pick up” no matter how anxious about this conversation he might be. And then on the phone with his dad, how he sounds so defeated but he doesn’t break until he has to deny he’s upset… and then all the emotion just comes flowing out. I don’t think anyone could watch this scene without relating deeply?? I think everyone has had phone calls where you’re heart is beating out your chest like this, everyone has burst in tears just like that before. He nailed it.

Standout detail: When he just cracks as he denies he’s upset:

3) Tarjei in 6.10 part 5 - Vært litt spess i det siste. I’m just retreading what’s already been said here but I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more true-to-life coming out done? I’m getting a little teary just thinking about Isak on that bench, steeling himself to make that leap. It’s the sheer reality of this moment that has this so high on the list. Really, kudos to Julie and to Tarjei for getting it so right and putting this on screen. It’s such a universal experience for people who’ve lived this but I’ve never seen it done quite this well. All the little moments of waiting, the tension he’s holding as they go get food first, how nervous he is the whole time as they circle closer and closer to it, the overwhelming RELIEF after they’ve started to laugh about it. It’s just… pitch perfect.

Standout detail: When we cut back to his face as he’s waiting anxiously for Jonas’s reaction after he said “It’s not a girl”:

2) Both of them in 10.10 part 1 - Minutt for minutt. I cryyyyyyyyyyy. First of all, I’m in awe of how Henrik’s face looks completely different in this scene?? He’s getting help from makeup and lighting and camera angles but it’s amazing how different he looks having turned off that light in his eyes. He’s fallen open in a way that we’ve never seen. We’ve caught him turned inwardly, seeming to struggle or be wiped out by something, for brief snatches of time before but now, he doesn’t have the energy or motivation to keep any sort of guard up and you can see it all. He portrays the weight of depression so well too, the physical exhaustion he can barely speak through. How he believes what he’s saying but he doesn’t want to… I’m just really impressed by how well he plays it. And Tarjei, he’s always great, but I especially love the self-consciousness in what he’s doing in this scene. Like how when he reaches out to hold Even and stroke his face, it doesn’t come to him easily, he’s a little stiff at it. The shaky resolve of his voice. And his determination, the fire in his eyes in contrast to the blankness of Even’s.

Standout detail: Henrik’s face when Isak first denies the ‘truth’ he’s telling him and Tarjei’s slight clumsiness as he reaches out and holds Even’s face:

1) Both of them in 8.10 part 4 - 15:15-01:01, from 5:28 to 8:58. I still haven’t rewatched this clip in full, it was almost too effective, but this part is the very heart of it for me. Tarjei’s face as he’s starting to put together that something isn’t right here… my heart is in my throat. And I just never can say enough about how well Henrik played this. I think it would be easy for what happened to be something shocking, something off-putting that puts distance between the audience and characters, even increases the stigma about someone going through a manic episode. But I never felt like that, I felt like the audience was Isak here… it slowly dawned on us. The emotional impact of this scene hinges on both seeing Tarjei slowly putting it together but also Henrik walking that fine line where you can almost think nothing’s wrong at first, but you’re talking yourself into it… it’s just a little too much… and then it gets to the point you can’t ignore. We’re alarmed because we know Even and we know something is off. The way they intercut this with their conversation on the bed, which is another great performance, that’s about things they’re not saying creeping closer but in a much quieter and more intimate way, Even realizing he needs to backtrack and adding “I’m just kidding” and how much both of their eyes are saying there…

I can’t really put it into words. I think the editing and sound help create a lot of the fear you feel with this scene but the empathy, what keeps you with Even and with Isak’s worry for him, what keeps this from ever seeming like a spectacle but instead deeply personal, comes from the performances the two of them gave here.

Standout detail: When Even starts talking about the wedding and it’s just not… hitting… right and the complex mix of emotions in Tarjei’s eyes here, the fear and concern and knowing:
